Obituary of Maria L. Nicolau

With great sadness we announce the passing of Maria L. Nicolau (Ciolanescu) at the Saint John Regional Hospital on February 11, 2006. Born in Varzaroaia, Romania, in 1960, she received a Masters degree in Engineering at Brasov University in 1983. Maria and her husband, Cristian, moved to Canada in 1996, and for the past eight years she had been employed as a Mechanical Engineer with the Fuel Handling Department at Point Lepreau Generating Station. Last year she proudly received her P. Eng status. A compact bundle of energy, Maria inspired her co-workers with her dedication, determination and consideration for others. As her command of English improved, we were treated to flashes of her dry sense of humour. To unwind, Maria enjoyed spirited walks and playing tennis. She was a member of the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. Maria is survived by her husband, Cristian Nicolau of Little Lepreau; parents Luca and Tiuta Ciolanescu of Varzaroaia, Romania; a sister Ileana Nedelcu (Relu); and brothers Ion (Cerasela) and Bogdan (Mihaela); all of Romania. Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Monday and Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Funeral service will be held at Brenan's Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, February 15, 2006 at 11:00 AM. Interment in the Little Lepreau Cemetery. Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.
