Obituary of William Orr. Mulligan
Mulligan, William (Bill) Orr. Formerly of 33 Broadway, Kennebecasis Park, Rothesay, NB died quietly at home Sunday April 16, 2006. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on Dec. 12, 1921, he was the son of the late Rev. William and Amaret (Cairns) Mulligan. His family moved from Halifax, to Charlottetown, PE then to Sydney Mines, NS. They purchased a summer house in Black Rock and maintained a connection to Cape Breton Island from then on. They moved on to Montreal, PQ where Bill spent his formative years. Bill fought with the First Hussars (6th Canadian Armoured Regiment) during World War II and crossed the beachheads on D-day 1944. After the war he attended McGill University and received a degree in dentistry. He served at M.A.S.H. units in the Canadian Dental Corps during the Korean Conflict. After Korea he obtained a degree in Orthodontics from the Université de Montreal. He set up his Orthodontic practice in Saint John, N.B. in 1957. In 1958 he married Gerry Whyte whom he had known since childhood in Sydney Mines. Bill was a long time elder and pillar of St. John and St. Stephen Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Canadian Association of Orthodontists, the American Board of Orthodontics, and the Canadian Dental Association. Bill was kind, he was generous, he appreciated the ridiculous. He loved fine food ("One should be venturesome when it comes to food!"). He loved travel to tropical locales. He never forgot to drop a postcard to his friends. He chronicled our lives in slides and movies. He adored his granddaughters. He is survived by 2 daughters, Dr. Lois Mulligan (Robert McCleave) of Kingston, ON and Dr. Jane Mulligan (Dr. Greg Grudic) of Niwot, CO, and by 3 granddaughters Amaret Grudic and Lily and Rose McCleave, nieces Kerry, Kathy and Tara and nephew Kevin. He was predeceased by his wife Gerry and his twin brother Thomas. Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home Chapel, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John NB (634-7424) with visiting from 2 PM until 4 PM and 7PM until 9PM on April 27. The funeral will be held at St John and St Stephen Church on April 28 at 2:00PM. Donations in his memory to the Canadian Diabetes Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of the donor's choice would be greatly appreciated by the family.
