Obituary of Basil Arthur Prescott

Basil Arthur Prescott of Saint John, NB, was born at Welsford, NB, in 1920 and was the son of the late Rev. Joseph and Maude M. Prescott. He was predeceased by his first wife Mary A. in 1987 and is now survived by his wife A. Elizabeth Hoyt Prescott, QC, son Dr. A. Joseph Prescott, DDS, and his wife Brenda, daughter Barbara Prescott, BEd, granddaughter Jacqueline Prescott Boyd and her husband Shannon. His sister Constance Waters predeceased him. Mr. Prescott received his formal education at Rothesay Collegiate School (1929-1937) after which he was employed by the Bank of Nova Scotia and T. McAvity and Sons Ltd. in Saint John before joining the RCAF in 1941 for service in Canada, the UK and North Africa until discharged at the end of WW II in 1945. After the war Mr. Prescott was employed briefly in accounting with Maritime Dairies Ltd. before moving on to the Federal Government Services with the Department of Finance for 21 years and Public Works Canada for 17 years serving as a Senior Finance and Administrative Officer until his retirement in 1981. Mr. Prescott was an active member of the Anglican Church and served many years as Church Worden, Parish of Simonds including churches at Loch Lomond, Lakewood Barnesville, Upham, Black River, and Golden Grove. He also served on the Parish treasure of Simonds for 21 years. Mr. Prescott was also an active member of the Freemasons in New Brunswick, he served two terms as Master of his Mother Lodge, the union Lodge of Portland #10 and office in the Grand Lodge of New Brunswick including Deputy Grand Master #1, Grand Director of Ceremonies and Grand Secretary for New Brunswick. He also held membership and office in the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Masonary, was a member of the Luxor Temple Shrine of Masons and an Honorary Member of the Royal Order of Scotland. In the community Mr. Prescott was also very active on Home and School Affairs, the Board of School Trustees for the former Parish of Simonds and later District #20 and played an active role in the organizing and building of the present Simonds Regional high School. At his request there will not be any visiting at Brenan’s Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row (634-7424). The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 18, 2006, at 2:00 pm, from St. John Baptist & St. Clements Mission Church. Following cremation interment will take place at Ocean View Memorial Gardens.
