Obituary of Mildred Kate Trueman

TRUEMAN, Mildred Kate … The death of Mildred Kate Trueman R.N. of Hampton, NB, wife of the late Stuart Trueman, occurred Friday, July 28, 2006, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in River Glade, NB, on July 8, 1912, a daughter of the late J. Riley and Kate (Colpitts) Stiles. She helped pioneer psychiatric nursing in New Brunswick. Upon graduating in 1934 from the Montreal General Hospital School For Nurses, she worked at the Provincial Hospital in Fairville when it opened its first treatment unit. This was in a day when many patients of this mental hospital were bent and disfigured from living in coffins. In the late 1960s and early 1970s she served as an industrial nurse at Irving Pulp and Paper, where she introduced first aid teams. She and her husband co-authored two cookbooks of traditional New Brunswick recipes. Survived by two sons: Mac (Cathy) Trueman of Hampton and Dr. Douglas (Debbie) Trueman of Fredericton; two brothers: Fred (Sylvia) Stiles of St. Albert, AB and Bob (Mae) Stiles of Pembroke, ON; two sisters: Helen O’Blenis of Salisbury, NB, and Marjorie Matthews of Kelowna, BC; five grandchildren: Geoffrey (Tina) Trueman, Stephen (Tammy) Trueman, Jennifer (Kevin) Winters, Heather Trueman and Wesley Trueman; five great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her husband, Stuart; brother, Dr. Esmond Stiles; two sisters, Bernis Steeves and Lillian Morton. Arrangements are under the care of Brenan’s Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506) 634-7424. Family members will receive visitors at the funeral home on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, July 31, from Brenan’s Chapel at 2:15 pm. Interment will be in Fernhill Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
