Obituary of Francis Phillips
The death of Francis Phillips occurred on August 15, 2006 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Frank was a Journeyman painter and decorator for the Saint John, and later District #20, school board for many years. He was active as a leader in the Boy Scout movement and youth groups in St. George’s Parish, West Saint John. Also a long time member of the Canadian Armed Forces, Reserves, he served with the Royal Canadian Engineers and the Royal Canadian Navy Signal Corps … 722 Communications Squadron. Frank devoted much of his volunteer life to the labor movement as an organizer, negotiator, and executive officer, most recently with Local # 380 CUPE. His door was always opened and he never turned away anyone in need. He readily lent his quick mind, sense of humor, and writing talents to many. Generous and compassionate, he was an undiscriminating friend to all he met and champion of the underdog. He is survived by his daughter Susan (Rodney) Whalen, of Rowley, and his son Michael of Saint John. He was predeceased by his parents: Marion (Little) Phillips and Mark Edward Phillips, his wife Elsie (Meating) Phillips, and his long-time companion Anne (Lynch) Brown. Following cremation at Brenans Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row (634-7424), the family will receive relatives and friends on Saturday, August 19, 2006 from 12 Noon until 1:00 pm, when the funeral service will be held at Brenans Chapel. A private family interment will be held at a later date at Fernhill Cemetery. Remembrances made to Romero House or the charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated.
