Obituary of Mitchell Franklin

Franklin, Mitchell, O.C., LL.D., D.LITT., F.R.S.A. - In his 93rd year, after a period of failing health, died peacefully on November 23, 2006 at his home in Bains Corner, New Brunswick. Born in Montreal, he was the only son of Joseph and Frances (Herschorn) Franklin. Educated in Halifax and Ottawa, he later served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. Survived by his loving wife, Janice (Benson), and his children, Beverley and Neil, four grandchildren, Allyson, Jennifer, Daniel and Kathryn and a nephew, Franklin Babb. He was predeceased by a son, Roger, a sister, Lillian, and his former wife, "Pat" Franklin. Mr. Franklin was a man of enormous presence and influence. His humanitarian and philanthropic endeavours embraced a wide spectrum of social concerns. One of his greatest satisfactions was the establishment of the Franklin Cultural Centre on his Estate at Bains Corner. He generously provided care and comfort to thousands of people - young and old alike - at his beloved Franklin Farms. Mr. Franklin was instrumental in the establishment of the Fundy Trail which will forever remain a testament to his extraordinary strength of will, vision and selflessness. He died full of honours bestowed on him in recognition of his endless generosity, his tireless energy and his dedicated and effective service to humanity. Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (506) 634-7424 where following cremation, visitation will take place on Monday, November 27, 2006 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A memorial service will be held in Brenan's Chapel on Tuesday, November 28, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. to celebrate his long and eventful life.
