Obituary of Maurice P. Shaw

“Unto the Hills Around, do I Lift up my Longing Eyes”. It is with deep sorrow that Maurice’s family announce his passing on Tuesday, February 27, 2007 at Ridgewood Veteran’s Wing. Maurice was in his 92nd year, having been born in Carleton County, NB, on March 11, 1915, to late Perry and Paulina (Cronkhite) Shaw. His early years were spent in Hartland, NB, where he enjoyed many years of hockey. He graduated from Hartland High School, Provincial Normal School, where he was the youngest student in his class, and the University of New Brunswick where he received his BA and BEd. He taught in New Brunswick until he enlisted in World War II with the Carleton and York Regiment. Maurice was on the first ship of Canadians that landed in England and served there and in Africa, where was ill, and later in the Italian Campaign. Upon his return to Canada he was awarded the Order of the British Empire which was presented to him by the Earle of Athlone on behalf of King George VI. Following his duties overseas he worked with Veteran’s Affairs until his return to teaching. He taught for 31 years at Saint John Vocational School and upon his retirement he taught for two years at Amherst Regional High School in Nova Scotia. Maurice lived “Carleton and York” and kept a continuous check on the Veteran’s. He served many years as secretary to the Carleton and York in Saint John. He was a member of the St. George Society, member and secretary for many years to the Albion Lodge No.1 F & AM, member of the Fundy Chapter and later the Order of the Eastern Star where he served two years as the Worthy Patron. He was also a member of the Carleton York Regiment Association, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #69 and the Saint John Branch of the Retired Teachers Association. An adherent of the Anglican Church, Maurice was a member in early years of St. John’s Anglican Church in Hartland and later was a member and served as secretary of St. John’s Anglican Church, Grand Bay. In later years he was an adherent of Historic Trinity Church, Saint John, where he also served as Vestry member. While living in Grand Bay, Maurice was a founding member of Grand Bay Elementary School. Maurice was married in England to Mary Theresa Reid, who predeceased him, and is survived by his daughter, Helen Michaelson (Ernest) of Saint John, his wife, Shirley (Murchison) Shaw. He is also survived by three grandchildren, James, Jeffrey and Janice, three great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, including two nieces, Jean and Elizabeth in Scotland. He was predeceased by an infant sister, Marion. Resting at Brenan’s Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Wednesday and Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Funeral service will be held at Trinity Anglican Church, Charlotte Street, Saint John on Friday, March 2, 2007 at 11:00 AM. Interment in Ocean View Memorial Gardens. Remembrances to the charity of the donors’ choice would be appreciated. The Masonic Lodge will hold a tribute service on Thursday evening at 7:00 PM at the funeral home.
