Obituary of George Hopey
The death of George E.C. Hopey of Saint John, NB, husband of the late Eleanor Doreen Hopey, occurred on Tuesday, March 13, 2007 at the St. Joseph’s Hospital. Born September 21, 1931 in Saint John a son of the late Leonard and Izetta Gladys (MacDonald) Hopey. George had driven a truck for Gerry Fowler in his early years, had worked at the Dry-Dock and was a shipbuilder (corker) by trade retiring as a stevedore from the Longshoremen Local ILA # 273. Survived by his children: Sharon (Chris) Billings of Ottawa, ON, George Hopey Jr. of Gardners Creek, NB, Gail (James) Thornton of Garnett Settlement, NB, Gary (Linda) Hopey of Saint John, Glenn (Colleen) of Upper Loch Lomond, NB and Gerald (Pam) Hopey of Willow Grove, NB; a sister, Helen Folkins of Saint John; nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his wife, Eleanor (Milne) Hopey on February 5, 2006; brothers: Joseph and Leonard “Twitch” Hopey; three sisters: Anne Hopey, Etta O’Connell and Frances Causey; grandson, Jamie Hopey. Arrangements are under the care of Brenan’s Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506) 634-7424. At George’s request there will not be any visitation at the funeral home. A Memorial Service will be held from Brenan’s Chapel on Friday, March 16, 2007 at 2:15 pm. Interment will be in Fernhill Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
