Obituary of R. Gary Hanson

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Robert Gary Hanson of Red Head Road, Saint John, after a courageous battle with cancer on Monday, November 17, 2008. Born at Saint John on August 10, 1946, he was the son of the late Phillip and Bernice Hanson. Gary was employed for many years in the taxation business. In later years, before retirement, he operated Regency Produce on Hickey Road. It was there that he enjoyed many long conversations with the customers and felt most at home. It was also his greatest thrill to take all of the money from the poker pots on Saturday nights with his faithful good luck charm Cyrus by his side. He was happy to finally achieve his goal of traveling to the Caribbean on a cruise ship. In the winter he could be found rocking his chair directly in front of the wood stove with a bag full of peppermints in anticipation of his many enjoyable Christmas Eves at his daughter Angela’s. However, his greatest pride and joy were his four grandchildren. Gary is survived by his daughter, Angela Soucy (Bryan) and their children Alicia, Haley, and Brady of Quispamsis; his son, Michael Hanson (Betty Jo) and their daughter Chelsea of Saint John; his step-mother, Pat Hanson of Saint John; his brothers, Rick (Linda) of Saint John, and Wayne (Carol) of Digby, NS; and several nieces and nephews. Gary was predeceased by a sister, Sandra McRae. Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Wednesday and Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The funeral service will be held on Friday at 11:00 AM from Brenan’s Chapel. Interment will take place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances to the War Amps, or any charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
