Obituary of Gerald MacGillivray

Gerald Francis MacGillivray of Saint John, husband of the late Bernadine (Connors) MacGillivray, passed away on March 5th, 2010, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Saint John on July 3rd, 1926, he was the son of the late James J. MacGillivray and Geraldine A. (Bowes) MacGillivray. Gerry graduated from St. Vincent’s High School in 1944 and then from the University of New Brunswick with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He went on to graduate from Normal School with a First Class Teacher’s License. Gerry began his teaching career at Rothesay Consolidated School where he taught for 6 years. He then spent three years at St. Vincent’s Boys School. Gerry finished his career at St. Malachy’s High School where he taught for 29 years. He was a much loved teacher who was known for his sense of humor. He was always interested in sports, particularly baseball, golf, hockey and badminton. Gerry was a parishioner of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. His faith was very important to him. Gerry was predeceased by his beloved wife, Bernadine, in 1995. He is survived by two brothers, Philip N. (Inez) of Saint John, and James D. (Lorna) of Kitchener, Ontario. He leaves behind five nephews, Andrew J. (Bonnie), John J. (Carol), James P. (Lori), Lawrence G. (Jane) all of Saint John, and Donald (Marissa) of Toronto, Ontario; four nieces, Johann (Brian Gallant) of Kitchener, Ontario, Sandra (Michael Lonergan) of Toronto, Ontario, Mary Lou (Bob) Brittain, and Anne (Mark) O’Brien of Saint John. He was also predeceased by a sister, Theresa, and an infant brother John. Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), there will be visiting on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 10th, 2010, at 10:00 am from St. Rose of Lima Parish in West Saint John. A reception will follow at Brenan’s Bay View Funeral Home on 1461 Manawagonish Road. Interment will take place at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
