Obituary of Sgt. H. E. Hazen Smith
SGT. H.E. SMITH Hazen Edward Smith of Saint John, husband of Joan F. (Wilson) Smith, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 at the Saint John Regional Hospital, surrounded by his family. Born at Codys, Queens County on February 15, 1934, he was a son of the late Ruben and Mae (Worden) Smith. Hazen had a long and distinguished career with the Canadian Armed Forces, where he served with the # 1 Royal Canadian Horse Artillery in Korea, Truro, twice in Germany, and finished his career at CFB Gagetown. In his spare time, Hazen enjoyed fishing and hunting, especially in the Coles Island area, and was a fan of the Montreal Canadiens. He also enjoyed the company of his cats and dogs. In addition to his wife of nearly 58 years, Hazen is survived by his son, Brian Smith (Beth Comeau) of Saint John, and his daughter Joanne Curbishley (Robert) of Saint John; grandson Bradley Smith; twin granddaughters Amanda Curbishley and Michelle Curbishley; step grandchildren Jason, Michelle, and Jamie Comeau; and several nieces and nephews. Hazen was predeceased by his son, David Smith in 2009; by sisters Dorothy Sherwood and Margaret Doucette; and by brothers Lloyd Smith and Elmer Smith. Resting at Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Friday, December 14, 2012 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The Funeral Service will be held from Brenan's Chapel on Saturday, December 15, 2012 at 2:00 PM. Interment will take place in Greenwood Cemetery on Monday, December 17, 2012 at 2:00 PM. A Royal Canadian Legion Veteran’s Tribute Service will be held on Friday at 7:00 PM at the funeral home.
