Obituary of James Chester Hamilton Martin

MARTIN, James Chester Hamilton ? After an unexpected illness of three weeks, Jim, aged 73, passed away peacefully at the Palliative Care Unit of the Saint John Regional Hospital on Wednesday, September 22, 2004. Jim was born in Moncton, NB the son of the late Chester and Irene (Bevans) Martin. He was a Beaverbrook Scholar, graduating with Honours Chemistry from Mount Allison University in 1954. Following a short career as a research chemist with Hudson's Bay Mining & Smelting in Flin Flon, Manitoba, Jim pursued studies in Psychology at Dalhousie University; then, for almost three decades he worked with the N.B. Department of Health in various capacities. His early appointments included Chief Psychologist, Child Psychiatric & Adult Mental Health Clinic in Saint John, NB; A provincial Supervisor of Psychology; Regional Director, Psychological Services for Health Region II. For several years Jim was the Co-ordinator of the Regional Psychology and Rehabilitation Programs at the Saint John Regional Health Clinic and from 1987 ? 1990 was the Clinic's Acting Regional Director. Prior to his retirement in January 1992 he held the post of Provincial Co-ordinator Forensic Mental Health with the N.B. Mental Health Commission. Jim held membership in several professional associations and in 1986 the N.B. College of Psychologists granted him Honourary Member status. He is a former President of the N.B. Psychological Association; Registrar, N.B. Board of Examiners in Psychology; and Atlantic Co-ordinator, Association for Advancement of Behaviour Therapy. In both his professional career and community service, Jim was committed to ensuring that individuals with intellectual disabilities lived meaningful and valued lives. Jim is survived by his wife, Doris (Smith) Martin; daughter, Anne at home; sons, Jamie and Stephen of Saint John; grandson, Matthew of Medicin Hat, Alberta and two sisters, Molly Deacon of Burlington, ON and Dr. Pat Martin Bates (Clyde) of Victoria, BC. He was predeceased by a daughter, Susan. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506) 634-7424. Following cremation visiting will be held on Saturday, September 25, 2004 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the funeral home. Memorial Service will be held from Brenan's Chapel on Sunday, September 26, 2004 at 2 pm. Interment will be held at Fairhaven Memorial Gardens in Moncton at a later date.
