My name is Mary Catherine Pamela Sherwood. My Aunt Jo was my mother's (Margaret Riley Sherwood) sister. I only just found out of her passing. She was my special Auntie Jo. She was such a loving and caring woman and such an inspiration to me. Just as she loved her students, she loved her family. It was a long time ago. I learned to read with her guidance, I learned patience with her understanding and I still smile at the joy we all experienced at her wedding. She insisted I play my guitar and sing to the children that day. How was I to know, the profound influence she made on my life. My mother loved her so, as did all of her nieces and nephews and I miss her. My condolences to all of her family. Please know, she will be greatly missed.

I was very sorry to hear of Jo's death. I will always fondly remember her as kind and sweet. She was a regular at Rocmaura and my favourite recollections were of her in the Telegraph Journal spinning the wheel playing the casino games at one of our Galas. I will also never forget an hilarious incident in which I thought it was a good idea to take my Bengal cat to visit her at Shannex. The cat, who was very skiddish, climbed right inside one of those big chairs in their lobby. Soon a very large gathering grew, trying to help us coax this cat out of the chair. Jo will be missed by many. She was a special lady. I hope that wonderful memories comfort your family.

My very first memories of Jo Riley date back to when my siblings and I were wee children and our Mom hosted Bridge Club gatherings on a rotating basis with the other Bridge Club Girls. We loved it when Mom hosted these gatherings because we got to sample special treats such as chocolate-covered raisins and yummy home-made squares. But what I remember most about those gatherings were the peals of laughter that coursed through our home on Lansdowne Avenue. These women took their bridge-playing seriously but that didn't stop them from sharing hilarious stories and witty quips with one another. Off in the wings, we kids would giggle every time an eruption of laughter occurred. This Bridge Club started up when our Mom and her friends were in high school! When it reached the 55-year mark, some of the members were interviewed by the CBC. It continued after that....The women in the group forged lifelong friendships and supported one another through thick and thin. After Mom moved to Calgary, she kept in close and constant touch with Jo Whelan. Jo was truly one of the loveliest people to ever grace this Earth: gentle, kind, giving, wise, cheerful no matter what the circumstances, and always sensitive to the needs of others. When we'd all come from away on summer visits to pour into Mom's little house on Millidge Avenue (which only had one shower), Jo would invite us and our kids over to her lovely and welcoming home so we could freshen up after trips to the beach or other excursions. She loved to show us around her latest updates to her beautiful garden. I extend heartfelt condolences to Jo's family and to all who knew and cherished her. We McNulty kids all loved Jo Whelan and are forever grateful for all the fun and delight that Jo and the other Bridge Club members brought into our Mom's and our lives over the course of many, many years. May she rest in eternal peace with her beloved Hugh, with her dear siblings, and with her treasured Friends in the Wednesday Night Bridge Club.

My condolences to all of Jo's family and friends. She always took the time to stop for a chat and ask for an update on my parents, Ed and Joan Whalen, whenever I'd see her at mass at St. Pius....and later when we'd cross paths at Shannex, when my parents both went there for care. She was just so genuine and kind. She was also one of the only people of that generation who could tell me apart from my sister, as many people think my sister and I look so much alike. Even when her eyesight failed her, she still got it right, because she took the time to stop and look and see me. What a lovely woman and a special member of our extended family.
Rest in peace, Jo, and thank you for caring so much about all of the extended members of the Whalen clan.

So very Sad to hear of the Loss of this Amazing Lady .Sincerest Condolences to her family. My own mother ,Margaret was her eldest sister. My earliest memories were happy ones ,running along that hallway and up those stairs of that home on Paradise Row. That clock in the kitchen ,the cookie jar on the counter, the sounds of Church Chimes beyond that same window on Sunday mornings. Beloved Auntie Jo teaching us how ,by example, to be respectful, kind ,generous .considerate of others in addition to how to read .For Our Auntie Jo, teaching was far more than just a job ,it was a Vocation , a Calling, A Lifelong Commitment .I know exactly what Jo meant to my own Mother because my Mom often spoke lovingly of her family .We learned lessons on how to be respectful of Elders, considerate of those with Mental Health Issues, how to work for the betterment of those who needed a hand up, how to work within the system to bring about Change with Justice and Compassion for All .Lesson I tried to teach my own Sons and daughters. Rest in Peace Auntie Jo and Thank You

I am so sorry to hear of Jo’s passing. My mom, Jean Gallant, was part of the famous bridge club. They were all such wonderful friends and enjoyed so many memories together. Mom and I would visit Jo when she first moved to Shannex. It was always a lovely visit to see two of the bridge club ladies together. Thinking of your family and Jo
