Obituary of Florentine Mary Johnston

Saddened by our loss but comforted by the memory of a life lived to the absolute fullest, the family of Florentine (Monty) Montague Johnston announces her passing on April 5, 2023, at the age of 105.

Born on September 16, 1917, to Elize (Kerry) and Frederick Boudreau of Poulamon, Cape Breton, NS, Monty graduated with high honours from Saint John Vocational School and worked as an educational specialist at the New Brunswick Museum.

Monty remained an active volunteer for both church and community, assisting in many local events well after her 100th birthday. She helped begin the Rocmaura Auxiliary, was a member of St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary, the Saint John Regional Hospital Auxiliary and past Secretary of the Federal Superannuates (Postal) and a member from 1956 of the Saint Pius X C.W.L. She also enjoyed many hobbies including her extensive travelling, her garden and her many exquisite crafts.

The last of her immediate family, Monty was predeceased by her first husband, John Francis Montague, by her second husband George S. Johnston, by her three brothers Homer, Philip, Arthur and her two sisters Leotha and Juliette. Left to mourn are her children Maureen (Martin) of Dartmouth NS, Kevin (Christine) of Fredericton NB and Shawn (Raymond) of Rothesay NB; five grandchildren, Mark, Morgan, Micaela, Jonathan and Megan. Monty also had ten great grandchildren and many close valued relatives and friends.

The family would like to thank both the health care team at the Saint John Regional Hospital and the staff of Chateau Champlain for their kindness and compassion.

Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (634-7424). With visitation on Tuesday, April 11, 2023, from 2:00 – 4:00 and 6:00 – 8:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place from Holy Redeemer (St. Pius X) on Wednesday, April 12, 2023, beginning at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow the reception in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers and in keeping with Monty’s spirit of service to the community, please consider a donation to Rocmaura or a charity of your choice.
