Every time I would play in SJ, he would come out to see us. In the early 90s when we were playing "She Ain't Pretty", we would get the audience to sing the lyric of the title or the chorus. Ian and his buddies would be singing Smoke On The Water from the top of their lungs to try and throw us off. He always was a good laugh.
Rest in peace in that great gig in the sky.

Ian and I met circa '86 and remained friends since to then. We had so many countless memories at various spots around Saint John including Club 6Hi and the Showroom. We took to the road a few times and saw the Rolling Stones in Foxboro and AC/DC in Montreal. For that show I was able to get us backstage where we met everyone in the band and had a memorable experience. Ian was a fellow who could get along and make conversation with anyone he met, one of his strengths. I never heard anyone speak an ill word about him. So many great moments, laughs and fantastic memories. Rest easy, friend.

I was truly shocked and very saddened to hear of dear Ian's passing! I was blessed to have had him cross my path when we both joined the ranks of Xerox. He became an instant friend and had a great humour which helped us thru any rough days at work! He certainly had a heart of Gold and even though we got separated and didn't work side by side , whenever we crossed paths again, it would be like no time had passed! He will be missed greatly.....but I am comforted to know that his smiling face will greet us when we meet in our Heavenly Home! My love and sympathy to all his dear family and friends! Thanks Lisa for posting all the great photos of dear Ian! I always had him on Facebook....what a loss to not have his facebook page to review, HE LIVED HIS LIFE to the Fullest!!
Til we meet again Ian!

I was truly shocked and deeply saddened to hear of Ian's sudden and unexpected passing.
Ian and I had a 7 year relationship in the 1990's. I have many special memories of Ian. I consider myself fortunate to have met and spent time with Ian's parents, Frank and Grace; and his sister Jill and her family, at various family gatherings.
One memorable concert experience that I would like to share is the time that Ian and I attended a Weird Al Yankovic concert, at the Imperial Theatre, in March of 1995.
In addition to having tickets for front row seats, Ian also had a backstage pass for us to meet Weird Al after the show.
During Weird Al's performance, he pulled out a pair of boxer shorts hidden in the front of his pants and tossed them into the crowd. The pair of boxer shorts, white and covered with red hearts, landed directly on the top on my head!
This incident definitely made the meet and greet with Weird Al backstage all the more memorable. Weird Al was gracious and kind while posing for pictures and signing Ian's CD and my newly acquired boxer shorts. Weird Al signed the boxer shorts with the comical comment "Hi Jill... I still respect you. Love "Weird Al" Yankovic."
All these years later, I still have Weird Al's boxer shorts and they actually glow in the dark!
This memory is but one of my many cherished memories.
I send my heartfelt condolences, on the loss of Ian, to the Stanley and Mullett families.
Rest in Peace, Ian.

I am saddened to hear of the passing of my good friend Stan. I know his first name was Ian but I always called him by his last name, and he thought that was pretty cool. I first met Stan at an unemployment seminar and then we got hired together at the ship yard in 1977. We had some great times and lots of laughs working together.
I remember taking many day trips to Calais to our favourite spot, the sandwich man sub shop, and chowing down on a sandwich called "the beast", and then stocking up on Hostess fruit pies to bring home.
Another memory of Stan was him dancing to country songs at our wedding, that was quite a sight. We would still laugh about that any time we got together. It meant a lot to have him there for our special day.
I can still hear him telling me he was going to stand in line to get us tickets to Aerosmith, Def Leopard and then once more again for Alice Cooper. He gave me my first bandana to wear to the concerts, which I still wear today. If Ian was your friend, he was your friend 100%. Cat Scratch fever baby!
RIP my dear friend, you will be missed.

My parents have Epic friends, and of the group of the coolest folks on earth, they chose Ian to be my Godfather.
Sam the Record Man,.....I remember being there with my parents and all of the group who would hang out there, along with backstreet records, such cool music, and spaghetti dinners with all of them at Steve and Barbs.
Core memories, we call them, I couldn't wait to be older so I could be cool with them, not realizing at the time that they would get older too. Some losses create a tear in the fabric of time, I carry so much gratitude for being able to have such incredible adults around to create the best iconic role models.
Rest in Peace, perfection, and Rock n Roll.

Ian was my friend…. as he was to so many others…
When you met him, you met the real person, open, engaged, and present… and you were immediately captivated by his sometimes cutting wit, his vast intelligence and knowledge on many many subjects… including an encyclopaedic knowledge of rock music, which was our strongest common bond.
Ian was always sincere and I treasured our many interactions… Numerous through the 80s and 90s and less so in the 2000s …
but whether it was 10 years when you last talk to him, or 10 minutes, he was there… Present and engaged and easily sharing his opinion on how you could improve your band LOL but also warm appreciation for your efforts.
My heart goes out to his family and closest friends, whom he had daily interactions with…
I’ll miss the future opportunities to chat, smile and laugh with Ian.
I remember him so fondly… the best rock ‘n’ roll hair, the great smile, and his engaging personality.
My life is so enriched by his friendship.

Never forget early Sam the record man years as a meeting place then Backstreet , Ian was a fixture in my adolescence such a wealth of trivia and concert miles. Truly shocked to learn of his passing guess I'll have to wait for our next round of banter with that dry wit.

So saddened to hear the news of Ian's passing. Condolences to his family and fellow friends. I knew Ian since I was a young kid as I believe my mother taught him in school and she would have him pick me up from kindergarten and bring me back to his class with her. I always referred to Ian as the Wikipedia of Rock ‘n’ Roll as he knew everything there was and even more. I think he even knew things about bands that they didn’t even know about themselves. I am glad I got to know him from a young age and attend many concerts/shows with him. Ian will be greatly missed.

There wasn't a show, movie, or series he wasn't aware of, and if he thought you were interested, would loan you the vhs or cd. With shock and sadness Sue and I send our condolence to family. Ian has been a dear friend for so many years. We first met Ian at A&A Records in the 70's when he was around 17 years of age ! This was a special friendship with many road trips and the occasional flight for concerts.
Ian knew all our 7 kids and they of course fell under Ian's kindness, treats. When our 3rd child Timothy Tufts was born Ian quickly asked what is his middle name...Jon I said...his response why not Nugent ...you can nick name him T.N.T.
Reading this wall of TRIBUTE and the spot on Obituary leaves me with so many memories and speechless.
His weekly visits now will haunt me and God knows we will meet again, Love and miss you Mr Ian Stanley.
All our loving

If you are lucky, during your lifetime you may get the opportunity to develop a few friendships that help shape who you are. If the bond is strong enough (and long enough), the resulting adventures create memories that become so important and precious they take up permanent residence in some place in our brains, allowing us to play back these experiences like short home movies. My dear friend Ian Stanley fell into this category, and I am so grateful that the very limited space remaining in my old brain still has space reserved for many of our adventures. Whenever Ian and I spoke we would walk down these nostalgic pathways and reminisce, usually with significant exaggerations, as I am sure the lenses of our memory are somewhat narrow in their field of view.
Ian, I miss you more than I can possibly express and I look forward to playing back these wonderful memories often and as long as I am able.

Still haven't finished processing this; I really am struggling to believe it, but an obituary does make it more real. Incidentally, whoever wrote this obituary captured Ian at his best; he was loved by many, many people from a lot of different backgrounds, and for many different reasons. As far as my experience goes, I came to know Ian first through mutual friends at Sam the Record Man in Saint John. One of them, Steve Richard, became, over the years, one of my dearest friends, my bandmate, and collaborator at Big Sky Studio One and Curve Productions in Halifax. Steve and his wife Barb (who became a second family to me even before we all ended up living in Halifax) had a much longer history with Ian, through his work with Steve's band Razorboy and numerous other luminaries of the Atlantic Canada music scene through the '70s and '80s. My heart especially goes out to them and to all those folks who knew Ian best, as they slogged their way through the bar-band scene of that era. There are no doubt going to be countless stories shared from the folks who came to know him at that time, and I look forward to hearing them.
I was a relative latecomer, though, and really came to know Ian through our many, many passionate conversations about music, films, and TV, at first held at Sam the Record Man (in at least two out of three of its SJ locations) or our beloved Backstreet Records. We didn't always agree (in fact, we often didn't, to Siskelian-and-Ebertian degrees!) but my God, at least he was passionate and his arguments were well thought out (except for his assertion that "A Passion Play" was Jethro Tull's worst album - defending that one is a hill I am prepared to die on). Incidentally, I know I'm not alone in slogging through a debate about some piece of pop-culture with him; arguing with Ian Stanley was a sort of rite of passage, except it never ended. ;) Later on, we would have tremendously fun afternoons playing games at the homes of our mutual friends Howard LaBillois and the also-late, and also-beloved Wayne Smith. Having my worlds collide, spending time with Ian, Howard, Steve, Charles Murray and Wayne over a way-too-long game of Talisman was often the high point of my week. :) Even years later, with me being here in Toronto, Ian and I still kept in touch from time to time, and his kindness and thoughtfulness often took me by surprise, taking the form of an unexpected message about a new album he thought I'd like, a shared video clip of a classic Genesis concert, or a random joke. Anyway, I'm sure he'd be rolling his eyes at this rambling blurt of sentimentality, but he has earned it. Safe travels, you rock star, you. Saint John today is a little emptier, a little less feisty and impassioned, and whole lot sadder. I will miss you.
