I am shocked to hear just now of Mai's passing. We were flatmates in second year university---she always stunned me with her creativity. We reunited a few summers ago on the island, and tried to keep in touch since.I had no idea she was even ill.She passed away on my birthday.Condolences to her family---she was a very special lady.

I met Mai at her Queen Street studio eons ago…maybe even before I was a mother. I became a regular over the years at any and all of her studios – and my closet is proof! Mai always offered me a warm welcoming smile, a listening ear, enriching conversation and something wonderful to wear that she had just created! I love that Mai took her inspiration from fabric – colour, texture, drape. I wear her clothes often and to this day, one of my favourite dresses is a Mai Aru creation. She had incredible integrity as a designer, artist and woman. The planet and I will miss her twinkling eyes and artistic spirit and presence. I send heartfelt condolences to Agi and all her family.
Sincerely, Shauna Haugen

Just to send love and support to Mai's family and many friends. I enjoyed my conversations with Mai, as we had much in common in our backgrounds (including coming from a big family). And I treasure the clothes that I have from her. I will miss her very much.

Zack, Leif and Family, My deepest condolences. Mai and I were close friends for much of our adult life. We met in Halifax in our early twenties and remained loving friends even though we lived in different cities. Whenever the opportunity arose we would visit and share our time together.
Wearing Mai's clothes now means even more; I feel like I'm getting a Mai hug each time. She is deeply missed.

Missing dear Mai so much – highly skilled clothes maker, creative original designer, accomplished artist, free and independent spirit. Marlene first met up with her in Grade 9 at Donovan Collegiate, and the friendship has endured all these years. She remembers Mai visiting her in London in the late ‘60s, coming back from N. Africa, and Mai sitting in Trafalgar Square knitting her a cap based on what she’d seen in Morocco. Marlene still wears that cap, and other of Mai’s designs. John remembers his first meeting with her, arriving exhausted from a transatlantic flight, finding he’d exchanged cold and rainy London for brilliant sunshine on Lake Ontario, the sailboat creaming across Toronto Harbour, Mai feeding her baby, pot smoke streaming away in the breeze. Both remember fondly her various houses on the Island, her cramped workshop in Liberty Village, her brightness of spirit. R.I. P., dear Mai.
