Dear David and Shannon,
I was sorry to hear of your Dad's passing.
I was planning to go to the memorial service today with my sister, Deb(Taylor) McCready, but I came down with a bout of vertigo and couldn't travel. I hope this message reaches you even though the service is over.
I have dear memories of your family living in the Manse next door to my family in the parsonage, in Norton.
Mr. Pringle was taking courses at Pinehill then, and I was attending Dalhousie. He kindly drove me back and forth to Halifax a few times on the weekends during that time. I knew I was in good hands on the road. Your mom would make his lunch, with everything cut into bite size pieces, including the sandwich. Because he didn't want to take his hands off the wheel I would put each piece into his mouth. That's a dear memory I'll never forget.
My Dad, Rev Bob Taylor, had asked me to pass on condolences to you both from him as well.
I'm looking forward to hearing about the service from my sister Deb.
My husband Bob and I are praying for you during this difficult time.
Sincerely,
Heather (Taylor) Sherwood

PS... In that photo Erin posted of your dad, my mom, me (What's with that haircut? Maybe my parents were hoping for a boy? :) ) and my paternal grandfather, Frank Smart. Unfortunately, I don't have a point of reference where it was taken or any details so it could have been Nova Scotia or Ontario but now you know who those not easily identified were.

Shannon and David,
So so sorry about your dad's passing... It's been a long, long time - over 30 years - since the Petite Riviere days, but I remember that time fondly, having fun during those youth group days - winter nights ice skating and hot chocolate on Fraser's pond among other craziness we all experienced - and even more during the church services we attended during Sunday School. Your dad wasn't afraid to act silly or have fun with all of us, he treated us all with respect and kindness, and tossed out a joke here and there. He was a good, kind soul, and we really liked him as a person and a pastor. I can still see the twinkle in his eye when he teased me about calling him "Father Pringle" because I grew up in the Anglican denomination, not the United one. It was a fun, wonderful time in our lives.
We (my mom and I) liked him, a lot, and I dearly wish all of you had been in the area a lot longer.
I'm keeping all of you in my thoughts... Much love and tons of virtual hugs from your old friend "Vallie".

“Dear Shannon and David,
I have fond memories of Uncle Johnny during the summers we spent in Nova Scotia when we were young, catching up on the year while sitting around Grandma Herman’s kitchen table with your mom, our Aunty Di, eating Grandma’s freshly baked bread and her home-made strawberry jam, while drinking little glasses of lime cordial.
Later David and Shannon were born and there were day trips to the local beaches or strawberry picking often transported in a pair of Envoys — Uncle Johnny’s and Grandma’s and our dad’s station wagon.
Uncle Johnny, with his smiling face, always took a genuine interest in us. He often captivated us by telling us a story or about some local history, and he was always kind, and helpful.
Rest is peace with Aunty Di, Uncle Johnny.
With Love, your nieces Erin, Claire, Thorel and Elaine.

I last saw John at AST (Pine Hill) in Halifax in 1977 and that has been too long ago. We were students there, but I can't recall if he was a full or part time student. Upon meeting John, the first question I posed to him was if he was Gordon's son, as I lived one summer in the old manse at the Scotch Colony in NB, where his Dad had been minister.
I concur with tributes here in that John is remembered as being studious, personable and a gentleman in the proper sense.
To his children and all who knew him, I offer heartfelt sympathy and laud his ministry and presence with students.
RIP and in God's keeping.

Condolences to John’s family. I spent many, many days & years talking to John at St Martins Take-out & Ice-cream Parlour. John was a very learned man & loved to share his knowledge. I enjoyed our many conversations over the years. A very kind man who talked about his family many times. He was a great friend. Donna Moir
