Obituary of Ora Reid Dempster
It is with great sadness that the family of Ora Reid Dempster announces the passing of a wonderful father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Ora passed away on Tuesday, October 17th, 2023 at the Ridgewood Veterans Health Wing.
Born in Passekeag, New Brunswick on October 5th, 1934, Ora was the son to the late Ora and Marguerite (Reid) Dempster. The oldest of six children, Ora worked for Irving Oil before he opened his own business delivering oil through Texaco. He was an exceptionally hard worker, a trait which he passed on to his children and grandchildren.
Ora married the love of his life, Hazel, in 1958 and they enjoyed over 47 years together before her passing in 2003. They welcomed five children, David Allan, Eldon Carl, Susan Marie, Sharon Lynn, and Ruth Ann. Three grandchildren were to follow, Ashley, Colin, and Carly. He was also blessed with four great-grandchildren, Avery, Aiden, Reid and Hazel. Ora was never happier than when surrounded by his family. He shared a special bond with his grandson, Colin, who often went to him for advice and guidance.
Ora was a devoted husband and a loving father and grandfather. Some of Ora’s most cherished times were summer weekends spent at the cottage and camping at Walley’s and he always looked forward to the annual trip to Saint Andrews with Hazel and their friends. He was a lifelong member of the Carleton Kirk United Church and would never hesitate to lend a hand to those in need. He had a passion for gardening and enjoyed sharing his extra produce with his family and friends.
Ora will be dearly missed by his children, Eldon (Lynn) Dempster, Susan (Gary) Galbraith and Sharon (Allan) Turnell; grandchildren, Ashley (Chris) McKiel, Colin Turnell (Clare Tooley), and Carly Galbraith (Tim Colwell); great-grandchildren, Avery and Aiden McKiel, and Reid and Hazel Turnell; sister, Patricia Thompson (Cyril O'Conner); sisters-in-law, Roberta Dempster, Jean Payne, Joan Payne; along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents, Ora is predeceased by his loving wife, Hazel; his son, David Allan; his daughter, Ruth Ann; two brothers, Winston and Glen; and two sisters, Dorothy and Georgina.
Arrangements are under the care of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506-634-7424). As per Ora’s request, a private service will be held for the family. Donations in Ora Reid’s memory can be made to the Ridgewood Veterans Health Wing, Carleton Kirk United Church, or donor of your choice.
