Obituary of Verna Alice Mott
With heavy hearts, the family of Verna Mott, wife of the late Irvin Mott, announce her peaceful passing on Thursday, October 19, 2023, at Loch Lomond Villa, surrounded by her loving family. Born February 27, 1935, in New Jerusalem, NB, she was a daughter of the late Wilmot and Mildred (Douglas) Short.
Verna devoted her life to her family, her community, and to her church (RiverCross Church, formerly Main Street Baptist Church). She taught Sunday School and served on several committees at church and enjoyed knitting and organizing celebrations. She was a member of the Base Gagetown Community History Association, and she compiled a book titled “New Jerusalem Book”, which many members of the community authored, on the 50th anniversary of the expropriation of lands of the area in 2003. While living in the apartments at the Loch Lomond Villa, she was instrumental in advocating for seniors’ dignity through person-centred care with the Villa’s Planetree Steering Committee, a world movement for senior care.
Verna is survived by her children: Richard (Cindy), Roger (Dale), and Carole Phillips (David); grandchildren: Jeremy Mott (Laura Lee), Christopher Mott (Meghan), and Brandon Mott; her sister, Emma Thibault; and nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and her husband, Irvin, Verna was predeceased by her brother, Colby.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff and volunteers at the GEM Unit at St. Joseph’s hospital for their transitional care of Verna, and to the staff and volunteers of the Loch Lomond Villa’s Birch House, who really lived the vision of the Planetree Steering Committee and who made her time with them comfortable and dignified. Your kindness, care, and friendship will not be forgotten.
Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506-634-7424), with visiting on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, at 11 am from Brenan’s Chapel. Interment will take place in Belyea’s Cove Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances to the Loch Lomond Villa Foundation or to Bobby’s Hospice would be appreciated by the family. Please place online condolences at www.BrenansFH.com.
