Daniel Miller

Obituary of Daniel Miller

On February 19 th with family at his side, the sun set for Danny’s last time. It is with great sadness and much love that we mourn the death of Danny Miller, born and raised on Grand Manan Island, NB.

His passing has left a vast hole in the lives of his wife of 50 years, Carol (Moffatt); son, Ryan Miller; and daughter, Jan Miller. He will also be greatly missed by his siblings: Susian Lambert, Wayne (Gail) Miller, and Carol Miller (Don Gregan), along with his sisters-in-law Gloria (Ken) Pike and Susan (Ryan) Park; many nieces and nephews, and his close friends.

Danny was predeceased by his parents, Harley and Faye Miller; and brothers-in-law, Lee Lambert and Alan Moffatt.

Danny was described as salt of the Earth due to his love of his family, integrity, and work ethic. Although, mostly quiet, he had a passionate side with stubborn moments that mellowed with age. School as a child was not his favorite; however, as a curious man he became a self-taught jack of all trades and could fix or build most anything. He believed you needed a purpose to wake for and earn your way through life, as nothing is handed to you. Being a mechanic by trade led him to working on the tugs in Saint John, where he found his love of the seas. He moved back to the island with a promise to Carol that he would not go fishing as she began her teaching career. The ocean was his calling and in his veins, so he started with a skiff and 50 traps to play; however, his strong work ethic and drive built him a career of different fisheries over 50 years to become one of the most respected of the fleet. He contributed to the fishing industry as a Board Member and President of the Grand Manan Fishermen’s Association during their formational years, with his intelligence and understanding of the industry. His career was his true passion, and he was happiest sailing the seas. His humble and kind nature has left a legacy for his family and friends.

Arrangements are in the care of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506-634-7424). As per Danny’s wishes, no service will be held, and memorial donations may be made to The Swallowtail Lightkeepers Society (https://www.swallowtaillighthouse.com/) or a charity of the donor’s choice.
