Obituary of Tom King
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Thomas Benjamin King announces his passing on March 11th, 2024. Tom was born on August 5th, 1949, in Acton Massachusetts, USA, to Hobart King (Hobie), and Helen King (Sibosskey). He married the love of his life Nancy King (Parlee) on July 5th, 1980, and they lived a large portion of their married life in Saint John.
In 1971, Tom signed with the Milwaukee Brewers and played ‘A’ level baseball that season. In 1973, he was promoted to the ‘AAA’ club for that season. A true highlight from this time was striking out the great Hank Aaron. From 1975 to 1984, Tom played in the New Brunswick Senior Baseball League (NBSBL) for the Saint John Dodgers. His first appearance in the NBSBL was a showcase of what was to come. The import south paw had a 15-0 win, with 18 strikeouts and allowing only two hits. Tommy’s 112 innings pitched in ’78 and 151 strikeouts in ’76 were NBSBL records that were untouched for 20 years. He was a member of both the 1981 (Marysville Royals) and 1983 (Saint John Dodgers) Canadian Senior Championship teams.
Tom began his teaching career in Saint John and retired as Athletic Director at St. Malachy’s High School. He loved being an educator and was known as a favorite by many of his students. He also spent countless hours coaching baseball and basketball.
A very humble man, Tom was the strong and silent type. He was caring to all and a true friend through and through. He would be willing to lend a hand whenever needed. He loved to laugh and was a competitor in everything he did. Even the monthly card games with his friends were a competition.
Tom leaves behind his loving wife, Nancy, children: Troy (Cheryl) and Mike (Katie), adoring grandchildren: DJ (Justin), Finesse (Jon) and Oliver and great grandchildren: Jessa, Grace, Nash and Tommy.
A public visitation will occur on Friday, March 15th, 2024, at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (506-634-7424) from 11:00am – 2:00pm. A Celebration of Life will take place from the gymnasium in St. Malachy’s High School on Friday, March 15th, 2024, at 6:00 PM. (Casual attire is encouraged).
