Obituary of Marjorie E. Kingston

It is with great sadness the family of Marjorie E. (Spinney) Kingston, wife of the late H. Walter Kingston, announce her death at the Saint John Regional Hospital on July 31, 2024 after a brief illness.  Born on May 15, 1937, in Saint John, NB, she was the daughter of the late Earle and Viola (Newcomb) Spinney.

Marjorie grew up in Eastmount, but spent the majority of her adult life in Millidgeville.  As a young woman she worked at the Bank of Nova Scotia, but left to become a stay-at-home mother and raise her 3 children.  Marjorie supported Walter throughout his career and held down the fort at home when his career took him all over the world, sometimes for extended periods.  In addition to her children, Marjorie also cared for her ailing mother, sister and Walter in his later years.  Always selfless, and never complained.

Marjorie, like Walter, also liked to give back.  She volunteered for the Head Start Program, the Saint John Food Basket and in the gift shop at the Saint John Regional Hospital.  She and Walter were both avid supporters of the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation.  A Team Room was recently named in their honour at the newly opened Clinic.

Marjorie had many furry feline friends over the years and was known to feed a few foxes Gaines Burgers and bulk purchased bacon ends.  Cats were her preference, but she learned to love all her grand-dogs.  She loved her family, reading, British television shows, her gardens, her view of the Kennebecasis River and spent many hours on her deck with Walter watching their bird feeders.

Marjorie is survived by her loving children, Julie (Stephen) Gaunce, Andrew (Brenda) Kingston and Jennifer (Andrew) Brittain.  Her grandchildren, Allyson (Jay) Garnett, Cameron (Andrea) Gaunce, Brendan (Heidi) Gaunce, Emilee (Andrew) Kyle, Corey (Monica Moore) Kingston, Drew (Kayla Lunn) Brittain and Adam (Alexa Nicholson) Brittain. Her great grandchildren, Carter, Harper and Miller Garnett, Ruby Gaunce, Adeline Kyle and a new great grandchild Kyle due very soon.  She is survived by her brothers-in-law, Norman McFarlane and Leon Evans; sisters-in-law, Faith Kingston and Lois Kingston and many nieces and nephews. Also, her lifelong friends, Sue McLeese and Mary Ellis.

Marjorie was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, her parents, her parents-in-law, Harry and Alexa (Carter) Kingston; her sisters, Laura Spinney and Helen Devereaux;  her brothers-in-law, John, Kenneth (the late Connie Kingston), Malcolm and Reginald; and her sisters-in-law, Jean Titus (the late Raymond Titus), Helen Turner (the late Wilfred Turner), Phyllis Kane (the late Raymond “Buzzy” Kane), Elsie Kingston, Nancy Evans and Cynthia McFarlane, and her niece, Ann Jeffrey.

The family would like to thank and extend our heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Josh Tracey, your compassion will not be forgotten.  Thank you to her friends, Lee Paxton and Roxie and Dr. David Meek for your friendship and companionship.  Also, Tammy and Paul Peters for being such great neighbours.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (506-634-7424) where visitation will take place on Thursday, August 8, 2024 from 10:00 – 11:00 AM with the funeral service immediately following at 11:00 AM all from Brenan’s Chapel.  Burial to follow in Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery.
