Sheldon Foote

Obituary of Sheldon Atherton Foote

It is with sorrow but with an appreciation of life that the family of Sheldon Atherton Foote announce his passing, which occurred on Saturday, October 12, 2024 the Saint John Regional Hospital.  Born in Saint John on June 5, 1938, he was the son of the late Percy and Muriel (Llewelyn) Foote.  Sheldon was the 15th born and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Sheldon will be deeply missed by his devoted and beautiful wife, Ruth (Crawford) Foote (the two would have celebrated 62 years of marriage on November 10th) and daughter, Elaine Foote (he was her biggest and loudest fan at all her track events).  He will be missed very much by his grandchildren, Leigha (Trevor) Richards and Riley Foote (he loved and cherished then and wanted the world for them and was so very proud) and special grandchildren, Paisley, Oakley and Lukah who lovingly called him “Grumpy Grampy.”  Sheldon also leaves his sister, Kathleen (James) Dobbyn and many nieces and nephews.

Sheldon worked as an electrician with IBEW Local 502 until his retirement.  He was an avid bowler all his life.  Later in life, he took up wine making and golf at the age of 60.  He got not only one hole in one, but two holes in one at the Rockwood Golf Course…earning him a special write-up in the Telegraph Journal.  For many years, Sheldon and Ruth trailered at “Wally’s” campground, where many long-lasting friendships were made.

He took several trips with Glenn and Marcia Foote, where he became known as “Big Poppy.”  Over the years, Glenn and Marcia become more like a son and daughter to him.

His biggest passion was his large, beautiful garden, in which he took deep pride in receiving multiple comments from many neighbours.  His family looked forward to and so appreciated all the vegetables, bottled beets, pickles and jam received every year, even this year when he was not feeling his best.

In keeping with Sheldon’s wishes, there will be no visitation or formal funeral service.  However, relatives and friends are welcome to attend the graveside service, which will take place in Greenwood Cemetery, 1380 Sand Cove Road, West Saint John on Monday, October 21, 2024 at 1:00 PM.  A Celebration of Sheldon’s Life will follow the graveside service at Brenan’s Funeral Home Reception Centre, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506-634-7424) beginning at 2:00 PM.

For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Kennebecasis Valley Food Basket or a charity of one’s choice.
