Obituary of Dorothy Waterston

Dorothy (Dodie/Dody/Dinnie) Waterston, (nee McIntosh) of Westmount, Quebec and Westfield Beach, New Brunswick, died peacefully on Monday November 25, 2024, at Amica Bayview Village, Toronto, Ontario. Predeceased by her husband John R. Waterston and by their beloved son John Alexander, Dodie will be lovingly remembered by her children Douglas (Maureen), Elizabeth (Greg) Fanjoy, Andrew (Michelle) and Heather (Philippe) Felton; by her eleven grandchildren, Douglas (Lina), Kathleen, Brian, John, Catherine, Megan, James, Abigail, Rebecca, Alex and Sarah. She was so proud of each of them. Dodie will also be sorely missed by her extended family and her many dear friends. Dodie was born on January 2nd, 1935, in Montreal, Quebec to Dr. John F. and Dorothy Hayes McIntosh and raised in Westmount, attending The Study school where she made many lifelong friends and upon whose Board of Governors she sat for many years. She attended Dalhousie University, graduating in 1957, again making lifelong friends before completing her education with a Master’s in social work from McGill University. She took great pride in her profession. Dodie was a championship tennis player, for many years a member of both the Montreal Badminton and Squash Club and the Mount Royal Tennis Club, where she met John, the love of her life, whom she married in July 1964. They settled into their home in Westmount and raised their four children until John’s untimely death from cancer in 1975.  Following his passing, Dodie dedicated herself to raising their children, instilling the values of family, community, learning, and kindness. Dodie and her children spent their summers at her beloved home in Westfield Beach, New Brunswick where she entertained her many friends, welcomed visiting family and spent many hours tending to the property’s extensive gardens. Dodie was an active member of the Parish of Westfield and St. Matthias’ Anglican Church in Westmount where she volunteered for many years as a member of the chancel guild and cooked for Meals on Wheels. She always wanted ‘to do’ things and have fun; music and the arts were important to her; she, along with her friends, regularly attended live music performances, the theater, and lectures; she participated in gardening clubs in both Montreal and Westfield and traveled abroad whenever she could. As her children grew older and moved out of home, Dodie was excited to visit them wherever they ended up in the world.  From the United States, to the UK, Singapore, New Caledonia and Australia, she would book a trip and ensure each region was well explored. Dodie was a devoted grandmother who loved spending time with her grandchildren whether it was playing board games, teaching them how to paddle a canoe on the Saint John River or sitting around a campfire. To the end she could light up a room with her radiant smile, grace, warmth and twinkle in her eye.

A Funeral Service will be held Monday, December 2, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Christ Church Deer Park, 1570 Yonge St. Toronto M4T 1Z8 with a reception to follow.
