Obituary
Obituary of Melvin Gordon Smith
It is with sadness the family of Melvin Gordon Smith, husband of 63 years to Shirley (Hicks) Smith, announce his passing on April 2, 2018 at Bobby’s Hospice. Born in Saint John on September 18, 1935, he was the only son of the late James C. and Nellie (Gordon) Smith.
Melvin loved anything mechanical, from 18- wheelers, to fire trucks, to airplanes and snowmobiles. As a young man, he served in the Royal Canadian Air Force and then with International Harvester before his 29 year career with the City of Saint John. An early retiree, Melvin liked to play a round of golf and travel, frequently visiting Florida. He and Shirley, in later years, enjoyed exploring the area on drives around and about and, he, of course, tinkering in the garage.
In addition to his wife Shirley, he is survived by his daughter, Sharon Smith (Kevin) of Saint John; siblings: Joan Cooke of Milton, Ontario and Marjorie Ward (Paul) of the Kingston Peninsula, and several nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are under the care of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424). In keeping with Melvin’s wishes there will be no visitation or funeral service. For those who wish, remembrances in memory of Melvin may be made to Bobby’s Hospice, SPCA Animal Rescue League-Saint John, Alzheimer Society of Canada, the Brain Tumor Foundation of Canada, or a charity of one’s choice. Online condolences may be placed at www.BrenansFH.com
