Obituary of Roy Joseph Russell
It is with great sadness that the family of Roy Joseph Russell, beloved husband of the late Loretta (McEachern) Russell, announces his peaceful passing on February 2, 2019 at Ridgewood Veterans Wing in Saint John. Born on April 27, 1922 in Chatham Head, NB, he was a son of the late Bernard and Mary (LaPlante) Russell.
Roy was a medic, serving in Belgium in WWII and was honoured with the Legion of Honour medal. He was a proud veteran and sold poppies every year while he was able. Roy loved watching old movies, however, his favourite pastime was listening to country music, especially Hank Snow. Roy was good friends with Ned Landry and played with him many times. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Roy will be remembered by his daughters, Shirley Chase (Buddy) and Gail Bordage, both of Alberta; grandsons, Troy Chase (Jen), Todd Betts, Josh Dunfield, and Tony Chase (Shelly); granddaughters: Toby and Pamela Russell; Great Granddaughter Shelby Studer; nephews: Russell, Tommy and Donnie; as well as extended family.
In addition to his wife, Loretta, and his parents, Roy was predeceased by his brothers, Richard, Alfred and Simon Russell; sisters, Minnie Legrasley, Kathleen (Miller), Eileen and Tweeze Russell.
Roy’s family would like to extend their thanks and appreciation to the staff at Ridgewood Veterans Wing for the care given him during this past year. Your kindness will not be forgotten.
Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) with visiting on Thursday, February 7, 2019 from 2 PM - 4 PM. A Tribute to a Veteran Service will be held at 3 PM. A Celebration of Life for Roy will be held on Friday, February 7, 2019 at 12:00 PM in the Brenan’s Funeral Home Chapel. For those who wish, donations in Roy’s memory can be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
