Obituary of Robert "Bob" Spencer James
The death of Bob James of Saint John, cherished husband of Hilary (Smith) James, occurred on Thursday, July 18, 2019 at Ridgewood Veterans Wing. Born on July 31, 1938 in Stephenville Crossing, Newfoundland, he was the son of the late Robert and Kathleen (Smith) James and a proud Newfoundlander all his life.
Bob spent five years in the Royal Canadian Navy, where he served on HMCS Haida and attended many of their reunions. He spent many years in the metals industry and was a recipient of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers Award for Excellence. Bob owned and operated Forgey Precision Machining for a number of years. He served as Past President of Rothesay Kings Rotary and the Saint John Executive Association. Bob was a member of the Saint John Board of Trade and Probus. Together with family and friends, he enjoyed 30 years of boating on the Saint John River, four years wintering in Winter Haven, FL and a good game of golf. He always held a special place in his heart for all animals. Most of all, Bob treasured the times spent with those he loved.
Bob’s family would like to express their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the entire staff of Ridgewood Veterans Wing. The exceptional care and support shown towards Bob and his family will never be forgotten.
In addition to his wife of 56 years, Hilary, Bob is survived by his children, Eileen James of BC, Pauline Murphy (Richard) of Toronto, ON and Leslie James of Saint John; brother, Peter James (Jette) of Oakville, ON; sister, Peggy Sokoloff (Sandy) of Sarasota, FL; brother-in-law and dear friend, Brian Pickell of Oakville, ON; as well as several special nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Barbara Pickell and Elizabeth Tiveron.
In keeping with Bob’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424).
