I remember a time when Harry and I were soliciting donations from various merchants in Florida for gifts to be given away at an event in Anglers Green. I did the talking for the first four or five stops with positive responses. I asked Harry if he was going to take over if we received a negative response? He said No. I asked him what he was going to do and he said," I am going to take you to the car and give you a refresher course" That was Harry - always ready with a funny line.
I will miss Harry. He was a champion in all areas

We were so sorry to hear of Harry's passing. I can hardly remember a time when I didn't know Harry (and Glenna). I think I was 6 when I first met him at Momma Grace's house. Judy and I were in Grade one. He was MC at Neil and my wedding in 1977. By then we mostly only saw he and Glenna at Church, but it didn't matter how often or not that we saw them, they always made us feel comfortable and welcome.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time. We know that Harry is now resting in the loving arms of Jesus and you will all be together again some day.
With Love,

Dear Glenda, Phil, Andrew, and Family,
I was saddened to hear of Harry's passing just yesterday. Learning this news late,I took the time to read all the wonderful tributes to Harry on this site. He was obviously a leader in his community(city) who was respected by many. I first met Harry and Glenda many years ago at an Atlantic Alliance Insurance Convention, and I knew right away we had a lot in common. Especially the Insurance business, and Sports, and especially coaching hockey. It has been many years since I have seen him, but I remember him fondly. Please accept Nancy's and my sincere condolences at this truly, difficult time, and be comforted in the fact that Harry lived life large!
Sincerely,

I shall never forget Mr. Harry Gaunce. Many years before there ever was Baptist Inner-City Ministries at Germain Street UBC, Mr. Gaunce was Superintendent of the Sunday School, collecting South End Saint John kids door to door to care for them spiritiually. I only met him after moving to Saint John in 1979 from Chicago for five years until 1984, before being shipped to Africa where we are still living and working. Peggy and I knew this warm, but tough if he had to be, very generous man and his wonderful wife Glenna, in church and in the hockey arenas where I could take our son Jake, now an RCN Captain and Commander, to watch their youngest son Andrew on the ice. How many cups of free hot chocolate that Jacob drank in Lord Beaverbrook were sent our way!
I always appreciated this man, Mr. Harry Gaunce, and his family of three sons. In the Kenya language of Kiswahili, "haki" ~pronounced hockey, is the word for righteousness. See Romans 14:17. "The kingdom of heaven is not a matter of eating and drinking, but righteousness (haki), peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit."
To you, dear sister in Jesus, Glenna, and all our mutual friends who feel this loss, may the comfort of the holy Presence of the Spirit of God be yours today. May the JOY you have brought to so many others fill your hearts with blessings beyond any words that I can share. And be assured that according to Matthew 25:40, your husband, brother, father, and "Grampy", will surely not lose his eternal reward.
Respectfully yours with sorrow, but with hope,
Rev. Dr. Charles F. French, "Pastor Chuck"

To Andrew, Stephen, Phillip and Mrs Gaunce. Please accept my deepest condolences during this most difficult time. The first one occurred after we won the squirt A provincial hokey title and we were all treated to a T-bone steak at Danny's Steakhouse in Bathurst. That gesture made us all feel pretty special and I remember it like it was yesterday. The other event was playing on the pee-wee royals team that travelled to Sweden. For a child from a family of limited means, it was an experience I would not have had otherwise. I would meet up with Harry many times over the years and enjoyed talking about those great times. I know that there are countless stories out there like mine as a result of his great contribution to the youth of this city. He was often there... and I loved the fact that I could stop in anytime and get one-on-one lesson. I actually had Harry’s phone number, and would call him with my questions. - when to plant, when to take out... how much miracle gro to use... etc. He was always patient and helpful. I loved his easy-going attitude and passion for gardening. He loved the garden and we loved him. I will miss him dearly. RIP to his family. He spoke of his wife often.

I am so sad to hear of this news. I have loved Uncle Harry my whole life. From my childhood at Wally's and going over to his trailer to get candy or play the harmonica, to the huge bonfires we would have at night. He taught me how to water ski and used yellow rope to tie the ends of the ski tips together for me so I could get up.
However, my favorite memories were the yearly traditions. He called my sister & I every Christmas morning to hear what we got from Santa, and as we got into our teens, we would all have an early Christmas dinner together. Those meals were centered around laughter and Christmas carols and the retelling of old stories.
Uncle Harry was a regular, weekly visiter with my Dad. I was always so thankful of that relationship. His brought his warm personality to every gathering and sparkle in his eye will be greatly missed.

I remember going to a hockey tournament in New Brunswick, and I was going up with Phil and Jonny and I believe we went up a night early for the tournament. Jonny, Phil and I spent the night at Harry and Glena's beautiful home in New Brunswick. I was young at the time and was terrible with sleepover's so I could not sleep that night at all. I remember walking around the house late at night and Harry was going to the washroom or something and he said, "can't sleep eh George." I remember it vividly I was like 8 or 9 at the time, and I was crying missing my mom being the mommas boy that I am. The reason I share this story is Harry stayed up with me for a couple of hours and made me feel comfortable we watched a West Coast hockey game that didn't till like 2 or 230 in the morning. Harry was a joy to be around, he always made me laugh, but most importantly he was a good person. I will always remember that night though staying at their place, and he clearly could see that I was uncomfortable, and he was there for me. During the night we ate an abundance of sprinkled donuts.
I wish Glena all the best during this difficult time. I was definetly a fan of Harry, and I know he will be missed by many.
From,
Teddy Kinley (George in Harry's eyes).

I arrived in Saint john in 1988 as the new kid on the block, CEO of the YM-YWCA, Harry befriiended me and introduced me to key community members, he was always so very kind and helpful, often I would touch base with him at what I thought was his community office at the Delta Restaurant (can’t remember the name of it) he was always by the window overlooking King St. Wonderful Memories. RIP my friend and my sincere condolences to your family.

Sending deepest sympathy to Harry's family. It was a fun trip to PEI in Malcolm's tractor trailer when Harry went along for the experience. Many laughs and times of enjoyment. Harry had a great sense of humour and was a good friend. We will miss him. Great picture of Harry and well-worded obituary - described him to a "T"!!
