Robert "Fitzy" FitzGerald

Obituary of Robert "Fitzy" FitzGerald

It is with great sadness that the family of Robert Blake FitzGerald (Fitzy) announce his unexpected passing in his home on April 26, 2021. Born in Saint John, NB, May 17, 1941, he was the son of the late Blake and Gladys (McNamee) FitzGerald, and after his mother passed, he then had a loving step-mother, Nora FitzGerald.

Fitzy was a Saint Malachy's graduate, class of 1960. He then went on to do his Bachelor of Education at St. Thomas, class of 1965. He enjoyed his entire teaching career at Hazen White - St. Francis, 1965-2000. He truly loved being a teacher and especially found working with underprivileged kids the most rewarding.

Fitzy was known for his charm, quick wit, and love of the horseracing industry. He was the proud owner of 36 racehorses, with favourites being Golden Fella, Marcum Tech, and Crown Time Fella. Especially since his retirement, he could be found at the Sulky Room of the EPR with his friends, playing his favorite # - 5 with the 24.

He summered in Bangor, ME, for over 50 years, spending most of his time at Bass Park Raceway, where he enjoyed helping Heath Campbell and Val Grondin in the stable. He has many friends in Bangor, and notably best friends, Rick & Gloria Cushing who were more like family.

Survived by his son, Kevin FitzGerald (Cheyanne); his granddaughter who was more like a daughter to him, Melissa Giberson (Nicholas McQuade); grandsons: Justin FitzGerald, Ibra Mamboumina, and Nick FitzGerald; great-grandsons, Landon and William. Fitzy was predeceased by his loving wife of 55 years, Karen FitzGerald, beautiful daughter Michele (Doug Garnett), as well as his best friend, Rick Cushing (Gloria).

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424). In keeping with Fitzy's wishes there will be no visitation or service. To honour Fitzy, perform a kind act and cherish those that you love. Please place online condolences and remembrances at www.BrenansFH.com.
