Obituary of Larry Taylor
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lawrence (Larry) Taylor, which occurred on August 16, 2021, at the Saint John Regional Hospital at the age of 63. Larry was born on February 5, 1958, in London, Ontario.
Larry is survived by his wife Ruth Sperl, sons James Taylor (Laura) and Jason Taylor (Kelsey), stepdaughters Maria Sperl and Julie Sperl, his mother Lois Taylor of Belleville, Ontario, siblings Donna, Doug, Kevin, Ted, Kim, Wendy, Rick, Patty, Jamie and Shawn, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Larry was predeceased by his father Earl.
Larry joined the Canadian Armed Forces upon graduating high school and moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia where he dedicated his life to the Navy, serving 41 years before his retirement in 2018. Larry showed immense pride in his career as a Marine Engineer, where he served several tours of duty overseas to many countries. After retirement, Larry took on a job as a school crossing guard, to which he looked forward every day, even in winter. His other passion in life was Scouting, to which he devoted 20 years as a Cub leader, for many years in Halifax and then later in Saint John.
Larry was enthusiastic about life and enjoyed travelling immensely, especially cruising. His hobbies included kayaking, hiking, flag collecting, cooking, barbecuing, and being an all-around handyman. He had a great smile and enjoyed meeting and getting to know new people wherever he went. He was generous, kindhearted, and had a good-natured, caring outlook. He was always willing to lend a hand whenever someone needed his help. His final gift was the donation of his corneas. Larry will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home. As per Larry’s request, there will be no visitation or funeral; he wanted his ashes to be scattered at sea, where he always loved to be and spent so many years. For those who wish, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or any charity of the donor’s choice. Online condolences may be placed at www.brenansfh.com.
