Reading through all these tributes, I remember Auntie Judith mostly from childhood. Such a great laugh and so dedicated to family. Big in the room, big in heart and soul and perhaps most importantly, so big in her life's work. She just didn't talk - she walked the walk. Her spirit will live on in so many ways: her family, her students and her accomplishments on behalf of her communities.
Rest in peace Judith. Your work is done, god bless.

My family and I are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of my Aunt Judith. When I think of Judith, I see her smiling, enjoying herself with everyone around her, whatever the occasion and, of course, that big laugh of hers that filled the room and all the hearts within it with warmth and joy. Judith’s presence alone could fill the room, with her wit, charm and colourful personality, along with clothes and hair to match! Never one to miss an opportunity to speak up, she certainly commanded your attention when she had a cause to pursue or principals and freedoms to champion for those in need.
I have many fond memories of the special trips and fun times we did spend together... family BBQ’s and reunions, trips to Grand Manan, Halifax and NB sights, sipping lattes and catching The Expos in Montreal, in the shops and markets for hours, sunset patios, beachcombing, long walks and talks and so much more. Judith leaves behind a deep legacy of togetherness and familial love.
She was a genuinely caring and compassionate person, who cherished her family immensely, held her friends close and helped so many people in her community without reservation. She welcomed so many into her heart and home that you couldn’t help but feel the love. We can only hope that she can feel the love in return, by all of us whom she touched; all who will deeply miss her and mourn her passing for many moons to come. Rest In Peace Judith, you were and always will be a bright shining star in our eyes. Sincerest condolences to all in the family.

Condolences to all Judith's family for the loss of a wonderful & irreplaceable wife, mother, grandmother, sister & aunt. When I lived in Saint John in the early 90s & worked at the Red Cross Refugee Centre, Judith was a great ally & supporter. We were neighbours when I lived on Charlotte St. I often stopped by her Germain St. place to admire the lovely cottage garden she'd created there & chat over the fence on my walks home from South End Day Care with my little boy Gabe. Many memories of get-togethers with our friends & neighbours in those years, enjoying pot-luck, wine & lively conversations. Judith brought colour & laughter to any event. I've never known anyone so gifted at finding treasure on a Frenchy's trip, can just see her showing off her latest discovery with a delighted grin. In spite of hard times, she had a gift for life & will be so very much missed. My deepest sympathy to Ralph & all the family for your loss.

I was so very sad to hear of Auntie Judith’s sudden passing. She was one of God’s special ones, a champion of equal rights for all, a voice for Saint John city centre, imbuing her and Ralph’s home with her unique style and make it most welcoming for all the adored multi-generation of grandkids. Always ready for a laugh and could quell misbehavior with that well honed schoolteacher ‘look’ that had you freeze for that moment and think- what did I do or say?! I’m sorry I can’t be there in person to help you mourn her but she and all you uncles, aunties, cousins, second and third cousins that I have yet to meet, are in my thoughts and prayers.
God bless you auntie Judith.

To Judith’s family, heartfelt condolences. It was my good fortune to have known Judith as former teacher and colleague, campaign manager and friend. What strikes me most when I think of her is the determination and dedication she brought to everything, whether it was arguing for some grand ideal or engaging in a simple conversation if you happened to meet her on the street. Judith was always “present” in everything she did. No matter where or when I would see her, any greeting was complete. Seeing her would always make me smile because I knew we could disagree on just about any subject and still share a laugh and a hug when parting. Her life, at least in the time I knew her, was a testament to love and to authentic personhood. Thank you, Judith, for being you.

I was fortunate enough to be a student at St Pius School back in the 70's where Judith was teacher at the time. I was never in her class as she taught my older sibling. But I will say this, although I was never a student of hers I felt like I was. I still remember her beautiful smile as she walked the halls.
Meeting up with her later in my life on occasion was so special to me. I will always remember her kindness, her dedication to her family, her passion for fighting for what was right. My condolences to Ralph, her children and extended family and friends. May she rest in peace knowing she made such a difference in so many peoples lives.

Dear Ralph and Family,
We are so sorry for the loss of Judith. She was such a wonderful person who dedicated her life to social justice and inclusion. The world is a better place, and New Brunswick certainly is, because of Judith. We first met her on retreat at the Villa Madonna over 30 years ago. Her positive, outgoing personality was infectious and we immediately became friends, (silence or not). Judith's faith was so strong, she believed, that with God, she could "move mountains" and she did. We enjoyed our chats with Judith. She always had something interesting and thought-provoking to share. We will miss her. The photo is beautiful and captures Judith's spirit. The two of you had a wonderful loving marriage, Ralph, and made a great team, both being "movers and shakers".
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family,

Tiger ..... I was saddened to learn that your wife, Judith, died. We go way back .. around 1953 when I met her through her brother, Wayne (we played Little League ball together) at her house in Brookville. Didn't see her for a few years ... then there she was running basketball games (timer, scorer, she did it all). Judith supported and helped thousands of people over her life time ..... smart, determined, "gutsy" lady. Then I married her and Tiger Thomas ... an outstanding team they were. Not many like Judith around these days. A big loss to the community.

Growing up in the north end of Saint John, I had the good fortune of having "Mrs. Cogswell" as my grade three teacher in 1970-71 at St. Pius X Elementary School. She was, without doubt, the teacher that had the most influence on me during my formative years. Always kind and pleasant, she found a way to tolerate our many classroom antics while teaching us right from wrong and most importantly ~ tolerance and kindness.
I was saddened to hear of the passing of such an inspirational person who had a tremendous and positive impact on so very many people. The world needs more people like her ~ not less. We are certainly all better people because of her love and influence.

I was just talking about Judith a couple of weeks ago. Someone mentioned how great their children's teacher was and Judith instantly came to mind. I was very lucky because she was my grade 3 & 4 teacher. I can't say enough about her. She was the best of the best! She always called me Sunshine! She was beautiful inside & out! I couldn't wait to go to school to see her because there's not a day that went by that she didn't smile at me or have words of encouragement or something to lift my spirits when I was feeling sad. She was by far one of the greatest teachers I've ever had the privilege & pleasure of knowing. Even 45 years later, she still remembered me as Sunshine and would always ask about the rest of the family. My deepest condolences to the family. R.I.P. Mrs. Cogswell!

She had a way of making a child feel special and that stayed with me as an adult....Thank you Judith for all your encouragement, praise and most of all dedication to making the world a better place. To Ralph, my heart goes out to you as I know you and Judith shared many happy years together...that which will now become your story with her. Keep those memories close as this with time will see you through this time of loss. To all her family and friends, you were blessed to know her and she will always be near. This phrase that Judith and I share takes on a personal meaning now....De Colores sweet angel! xoxoxo

To the Meinert-Thomas Family : Like all of you she will sadly missed by so many. She had this infections laughter that could be heard before you stepped into the room. My first encounter with her was when she brought her brother David to the gatherings of the (New Dawn Players) now L'arche Saint John than David wanted to go Faith and Sharing but he needed a chaperone so Judith would ask if I be there for him. As we would be going to Yarmouth for 3 and half days. It was great to accompany David to these gatherings. Than I got meet another sibling who was making a Cursillo weekend out at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church Judith was on team and her sibling was a candidate. When it was over her sister asked where is Judith she hadn't seen Thursday night they had her hidden away as she wanted her sister enjoy the weekend. We as the team where she was and she came out in the most colourful outfit almost like a peacock. But that was Judith. She wore many hats in her community. And she held many hands over the years but now we have to hold onto her memories. REST EASY MY FRIEND until we meet again. Jannette Jarvis & James Gidney

My condolences to the family off Judith.
May your memories give you peace and comfort.
She was my 3rd grade teacher at St Pius X school back in 1971-1972. She was a great teacher and one of the few that I remember fondly.

I am so sorry to hear of Judith's passing. We became reacquainted some years ago at TD Station, as we shared a great love of the Sea Dogs. We often chatted about our beloved team, and of course, she was a super fan! In more recent years, I realized that the lovely Abbie Cogswell, who I knew at our high school, was Judith's granddaughter! She was so incredibly proud of Abbie and loved to talk about her at every opportunity. About a week and half ago, I saw Judith after a Sea Dogs game and stopped to say hello. I'm so glad, because it turned out to be the last time I saw her. I will greatly miss her spirit and compassion, and of course, seeing her at hockey games. Judith will always be in my mind and heart, especially as our Dogs vie for the Memorial Cup. I will be doing some cheering on her behalf! I know you will be watching, Judith!
