Obituary of Sister Katherine Theresa Young

Sister Katherine Theresa Young (Sister Mary Lois) peacefully went Home to her God on Sunday, August 27, 2023 at Ruth Ross Residence in Saint John, NB.  Born in Whitney, NB, on April 18, 1929, she was the daughter of William Joseph Young and Mary Reba (McKenzie) Young.

Sr. Katerine was a graduate from the School of Nursing of the Hotel Dieu Hospital (Religious Hospitallers of St. Joseph) in Chatham, NBShe nursed for three years in Moncton and Saint John until 1953, when she entered the Sisters of Charity of the Immaculate Conception.

Sister Katherine received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in Ottawa in 1962 and her Masters in Nursing in London, ON in 1970.  During her many years of Administration, she was the Director of Nursing at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Rocmaura Nursing Home in Saint John, NB as well as St. Vincent’s Hospital in Vancouver, BC.  From 1976-1986, she was the first Administrative Coordinator at St. Vincent’s Arbutus Extended Care Hospital in Vancouver.

Returning to Saint John, Sister Kate continued to share her compassionate presence in Spiritual and Religious Care in Day Surgery at St. Joseph’s.

Her commitment to her ministry in health care showed itself in her competency, efficiency and accountability~ values she instilled in others as well as herself.

Away from her ministry responsibilities, “Sister Katie” enjoyed the challenge of using her tube skates to circle the rink as a member of the Harbour Station Skating Club.  She also treasured her time spent sailing on the Kennebecasis River with her friends David and Rick, as well as Sister Marie Bitz.

Predeceased by her parents William and Mary, sisters Agnes (Wagner), Carmel (Lutes) and brother William Leo.

Survived by sisters Anne Boudreau (Adrian), Elizabeth Woods, Loretta Boudreau (William); brothers James, Edward and Francis.

Visitation at Ruth Ross Residence (105 Burpee Avenue) on Wednesday, August 30th, 2-4 and 6-8pm.  Vigil in Carmel Chapel at 7pm.  Mass of Christian Burial at Ruth Ross Residence on Thursday, August 31st, 10am.  Interment at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Saint John, NB.
