Obituary of Catherine Elizabeth Manning

It is with profound sadness that the family of Catherine (Sullivan) Manning announce her death at home surrounded by family, on January 1, 2024, at the age of 88. She was born in Saint John NB and was the daughter of the late Herman Eagles Sullivan and Dorthy Constance (Wark) Sullivan. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 59 years, John Manning, her brothers Charlie and Dr. Herman Sullivan and her nephews Jimmy and Matthew Sullivan.

She graduated from Saint John High School in 1953 and graduated as a Nurse from the Montreal General in 1957.  It was also in Montreal where she met the love of her life, John, whom she married in 1958 and settled in Saint John.

In the words of our mom “I’ve had a great life!”  She did indeed enjoy a full life, raising her three children and enjoying many activities along life’s journey.

She enjoyed spending summers in Acamac with her parents and brothers and later with her children, swimming, sailing, gardening etc. Throughout her life she curled, golfed, biked and played tennis. She also enjoyed a good game of Bridge with her many friends as well as her annual girls camping and biking trips.

She was a lifetime member of the Church of St. Andrew and St. David United, in which she volunteered and sang in the choir. She was also a Kings Daughter and volunteered for over 40 years with Meals on Wheels for which she received the Maritimer of the Month award.

She and John also loved to travel, from simple camping trips with the family to cruising in Alaska, the Caribbean or enjoying a European river cruise. Throughout their married life they travelled to Bermuda, explored a few European countries, and even made it to Australia with the Y’s Men International club.  Yes, she did indeed lead “A Life Worthwhile” as the motto for SJHS states.

Her greatest treasures were her family and the grandchildren and great grand children she leaves behind.

She will be greatly missed by her brother David Sullivan (Carol), her sister in laws Ruth Sullivan Pat Sullivan and Elizabeth Manning, her cousin Mary Coleman (Don), her son David Manning (Darlene), and her daughters Judy O’Neill (Walter) and Margot Manning Craft. Also mourning her death are her eight grandchildren-Cassandra Savoie (Bruce), Gillian Manning (Mike), Laurel Faiers (James), Clinton O’Neill, Brendan Manning, Eilish Craft (Dean), Calvin O’Neill (Carly), and Johnathan Craft; her six great grandchildren- Beckett, Simon, Scarlett, Briony, Parker and Rosemary in addition to several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB, (506-634-7424). A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at 10:30 AM from the Brenan’s Chapel and a private family interment will be held at a later time.

Donations in her honour may be made to The Church of St Andrew and St David, The Alzheimer Society, Meals on Wheels or charity of choice. Online condolences and memories may be shared at www.BrenansFH.com
