Louise and I mark Richard ‘s passing with deep sadness. Richard was a wonderful friend, scholar and educational leader. The central role of the historian is to explain why the past happened the way that it did. Richard was unequalled in this regard. He was always an interesting conversationalist and wonderful company. His many gifts as a History teacher will resonate with his former students well into the future. Richard will also be remembered for his substantial contribution to the development of the IB Program at SJHS.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Sandi and all of Richard’s family.

Richard and Sandi's careers at SJHS (1970 to 2000) paralleled each other exactly. Mine came close to doing the same. I had the privilege of watching the effects as together they brought history alive for their students, as they provided leadership especially in Andrew Garrod's drama program, as they conducted overseas tours, as they helped establish IB at the School, and as in retirement they compiled a 200-year history of the School. All of this is eloquently attested by the many tributes from former students, faculty, and friends. I offer my deepest sympathy to the Thorne and Keirstead families, and especially to Sandi as you travel the road to a new normal.

In loving memory of Richard:
When I moved to Rothesay from Moncton 4 years ago, one of the first people I met at St. Paul's on the Common Anglican Church was Richard Thorne. Within about 2 minutes of conversation he knew which genealogical lines I belonged to...Abigail Thorne was my Great-Grandmother on my maternal Grandfather's side (James Kincade) and Ella Mae Thorne was my Great-Grandmother on my maternal Grandmother's side (Daisie Anna Browne Kincade). He had a great laugh as he saw my surprised look, and replied, " 'Hey, you're more Thorne than I am!" Ever after that, we referred to each other as cousins, which we were, and often shared a chuckle or two at coffee time, after church. What a truly lovely man he was. My deepest condolences to Sandy and his extended family.

My best memories of Saint John High are intertwined with memories of the Thornes. Sandi and Richard both taught me history, mentored me, and led a group of us across England, Ireland, and Wales in ’87. As a 1988 grad, I was part of the early years of the IB program when students and teachers were all figuring it out (though we thought they had it sorted!) Richard and Sandi were great supporters of us fledgling IB-ers, and we could feel their pride as we got through our extended essays and exams, and earned our certificates or diplomas. Richard was like a senior statesman, keeping an eye on the school and holding its students to a high standard of excellence. Though it has been years since I’ve seen him or Sandi, I will miss knowing that he is there in the world. My condolences to Sandi and your extended family and the many people you touched along the way.

Most kids entering high school are wrapped in a mantle of naivete or trauma - often both. Richard and Sandra had an unerring ability to see the person inside and then to help students discover their own talents and inclinations. Under their leadership, the IB program at Saint John High gave students from Oak Point to St. Martins the opportunity to escape the label of being "from Saint John" or "from New Brunswick" and find acceptance in the world for who they are and what they can do. I was fortunate to have Mr.Thorne as my teacher. SJHS Class of 1984. In the past few years I had the pleasure of chatting with him when he would come in and see us at the Zesty. Such a lovely kind man. God rest his soul!!

I was so saddened to hear of Mr Thorne’s passing. I was fortunate to have had both he and his dear wife as teachers while I attended SJHS. Additionally, our class trip to Italy and Sicily was chaperoned by the Thorne’s which was a huge highlight of my graduating year. My heart is heavy for Sandra as well as my friends Nancy scs Bill. Wishing the family much grace and strength at this most difficult time.

I was in the SJHS class of 88. I did not have Mr. Thorne as a teacher but did have Mrs. Thorne for history. My sincere condolences go out to her and the extended family. Mr. Thorne touched and moulded the lives and minds of many. What a impactful legacy he has left. Thank you to both Mr and Mrs Thorne. RIP. Jeff Ferguson

I am so very sorry to learn of Richard’s passing. Although I never had Mr. Thorne as a home room or history teacher , my time at SJHS was enriched by Mr. Thorne. Be it numerous encounters in the hall or brief chats in the cafeteria, or extra curricular events and clubs. Thank you Mr. Thorne for pointing many of us in the right direction and demonstrating how we can live “A Life Worthwhile” - my heart is heavy and my thoughts are with Sandy and Richard’s friends and family. God Bless.
