Obituary of Richard G. Thorne
Age 78, of Rothesay. passed away October 09, 2024. Born in Saint John, NB, he was the son of William Charles and Anna May (Bell) Thorne. Richard is survived by his wife Sandra and brother Bill (Nancy), nieces and nephews Cindy Kelly, Kim Wright, C. T. Thorne, Michael Thorne and An Thorne. He was predeceased by his brother Terry (Linda).
Richard grew up in Saint John and after his father’s untimely death helped his mother raise his two younger brothers. His lifelong interest in history and politics began at the University of New Brunswick where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree then a Master’s of history. While teaching history at Saint John High School he met another young teacher Sandra Keirstead, who soon became his best friend and loving wife. After teaching for many years, he also served as Vice-Principal at SJHS. After his retirement he also taught at Rothesay Netherwood School. The many students that passed through his life greatly enriched his life as he did theirs. Richard took great pride in the accomplishments of past students and kept in touch with a great number.
Richard and Sandra lived on the Norton Shore and then in Hampton for many years before moving to Rothesay. He enjoyed gardening, writing, genealogy, all while being a lifelong learner and an active volunteer. He was a dedicated volunteer in many NB Elections and contributed his teaching expertise in helping design their training programs for Returning Officers.
An excellent cook Richard loved dinner parties, especially if the good food was supported by good wine and conversations. His journey continues knowing he will be dearly missed by Sandra, his wife of over 49 years.
The family wish to thank the staff at the Saint John Regional Hospital and all the medical community who offered him such great care.
